There are a few reasons I get up before sunrise to ride my bike. It’s a whole ritual that starts the day before. Odd as it sounds, I enjoy the ritual almost as much as I do the ride.
For starters, and especially during the summer, I ride early to avoid the heat as much as possible - it turns out too much direct UV is bad for you. Who knew?
Despite trying to beat the sun, I still have to deal with relative humidity near 100%, so even though I’m not directly roasting in radiation, I am still sweating literal buckets. The only way I can describe it is when I return home, it looks like I’m wearing a diving suit and just walked out of the ocean. Good times.
Riding early becomes problematic in the fall as my ride time in the dark is extended every day until I’m basically just riding at night. Despite lighting myself up like an Xmas tree it’s still pretty sketch rolling in the dark amongst the cagers1.
