Newsflash: This is the original #Brownlisted
Accept no fakes, flakes, frauds, falsos or imitations!
It came to my attention recently that Latino Rebels, a WACK east coast “Hispanic” media website, is using the name “brownlisted” for a weekly column. I did some digging and discovered that they only started their column in November of 2022. This pisses me off because I launched Brownlisted by Sarlos Cantana in January 2020! You can verify that by checking out my archives. Previously to creating Browlisted, I hosted my blog on my publishing website, which goes back a couple of decades, so i ain’t new to this.
But Brownlisted is mine and mine alone.
Before starting this Substack, I, of course, did some research to make sure I wasn’t biting off of anyone else. Because really, what kind of dickhead doesn’t at least check to see if someone isn’t already using a name…
When I coined the name “brownlisted” no one else was using it!
What’s interesting about this other site using the name is that I’ve had beef with them in the past and as far as I’m concerned, nothing has changed. For lack of a better term, they are LAMES.
It’s also interesting to note, for those of you unaware, that the pond for Hispanic/latino media/writers is tiny! Everyone is aware of everyone else so there’s no way this was on accident.
If you rewind the clock all the way back to the early part of last decade, when I was writing for Pocho Dot Com, I started feuding with Latino Rebels on Twitter. Latino Rebels started off as an east coast hispanic/latino conservative media company and they were desperate to get their footing on the west coast and sink their teeth into that west coast market. They failed.
At the time, LR had many corporate ties and an east coast conservative/rightwing Hispanic slant to their content. They were cocky about being conservative Puerto Rican/Cuban “rebeldes” and they came off like uppity assholes to any who questioned their business plan.
They also wrote an op ed at the time, trying to defend George Zimmerman before that story really blew up because he was also “hispanic” and they felt he was being unfairly attacked. It was gross and I called them out on it.
None of this sat well with me and thus started the great his-panic falso “war” on Twitter. If you have been with me for a while then you remember this era well. I gained a lot of followers back then for “beefing” with east coast falsos.
The feud eventually grew stale and I became bitter enemies of east coast hispanic falsos, their publications and their people. And due to creative differences with Pocho, and because they decided to continue their friendly business relationship with Latino Rebels, I stopped writing for Pocho and moved on.
For those who may not know, in addition to being a writer, I am also a successful and fiercely independent publisher. My publishing company, BSP Books, has put forth some amazing Chicano literature that has sold worldwide, and I did it independent of any corporate or political help. I am still one of a handful of 100-percent independent and Raza owned small presses in the US! I pride myself on that!! No corporate horseshit here - I call my own shots. Los “rebeldes” and a ton of other hispanic media companies can’t say that.
It is irritating when you pour your heart and soul into something and some asshole comes along and tries to jack your work. But that’s the era we will in now - zero originality, zero integrity and lots of thievery.
The Chicano/Raza market has always been an elusive and highly sought after target for east coast Hispanic companies. They have tried for years to capture the west coast and southwest Raza markets but they have never been successful because they are clueless.
Latino Rebels jacking my blog name tells me that they are still watching and still wanting to capture that same market. But rather than be original they have flat out copped the name and tried to spin it as their own idea.
Unlike the old days I am not going to get into an online feud with these clowns this time. Instead, I am going to keep doing my thing and keep them guessing.
They can’t do what I do and they know it. So they can kiss my ass.
But for the sake of argument, I want my readers to know that this is the one and only Brownlisted. I created this name. I would appreciate it if you would help me spread the word, tell a friend and recommend my writing and my books and help out so that when someone searches for “brownlisted” my blog shows up.
I do not have the juice or resources that they do but I do have them beat when it comes to raw talent, independence and originality.
If you see people promoting their garbage, call it out and let em know; there’s only one Brownlisted and it’s by Sarlos Cantana. Fuck any imitations.
