I came across an interesting and eye-opening Thread that touched on one of the many differences regarding so-called Latinos/Hispanics and how they are perceived, not only by other cultures/races, but by themselves.
It’s not enough that the colonizer culture is bigoted, Latinos/Hispanics have emulated that same bigotry and it’s as clear as day in this comparison of two major US cities.
The thread compares Latinos in Miami and L.A. and notes that in Miami, Latinos are seen as owners/wealthy/affluent but in L.A. they are seen as mere labor and poverty-stricken immigrants.
They denote colorism and classism as a reason for the difference but it goes much deeper than that.
Most Latinos know and understand that we all really don’t like each other too much. There is a cold warmth between the different cultures but more often than not, relations are just plain cold.
More so than whites (which is saying a lot), Latinos love to ask each other where they’re from. If your answer is anything but the same background as them you can expect that cold response.
If I had a $5 bill (inflation), for every time a Puerto Rican or Cuban asked my background, only to respond with disappointment or cold indifference, I’d be well off. Raza is low man on the totem pole in the Latino diaspora. Don’t believe me? Visit a Latino city that is non-Raza and see for yourself.
