My generation had a movement. Your generation has-self deprecating caricatures.

A few days ago, a new song/video from Cali rapper CNG dropped and it’s called (drumroll….): Frijolero.

Naturally, with a loaded word like “frijolero,” I had to see what the song was about and based on the teaser in the YouTube title screen, I can tell you I was not expecting much.

Here’s the video. Have a look. My comments on it follow:

Full disclosure: I’d never heard of this guy before watching this video and likely would have never been exposed to it without the homie Latino Slant posting a reaction video to it.

This was my initial reaction:

WACK. This shit looks and sounds like something kids raised on nothing but Blood In, Blood Out and “foo” memes would come up with.

My main problem with using a loaded word like "frijolero," especially in today’s double-edged sword era of willful ignorance and political turmoil, is that you absolutely need to know the political context/history behind the word!

Otherwise, it comes off like...this, which, in all honesty, looks like an In Living Color parody skit of Chicano rap.

But these kids don’t strike me as scholars or activists.

Bottom line: CNG’s ‘Frijolero’ is Ridiculous with a capital R and unfortunately in this era, it is to be expected.
